CEC West Slope Update
JULY 2010

Friend,

The recent listening session for America’s Great Outdoors in Grand Junction provided the public with a direct line to the decision makers in the federal government to voice their concerns for our public land. This session proved to be a shining moment for CEC and our supporters in the community. Hundreds of concerned citizens took the time to talk about how much they care about important conservation issues. The overwhelming turnout was only matched by the expertise our members exemplified through their well informed comments spanning a diverse mix of important topics. Make sure you check out all the supporter opportunities below and get out with CEC to escape the heat.

Oil & Gas Reforms
With all eyes on the BP oil disaster, Congress is now preparing to take action to protect our oceans and beaches. But drilling has had big impacts in western Colorado, too, and we need to make sure that any new drilling reforms also cover oil and gas development here at home.

» Take Action Now

As Congress debates offshore reforms in the CLEAR Act, please email Rep. John Salazar and tell him to give full support for protections against careless drilling in our own backyards. We need to speak up for enhanced environmental and safety standards, no more shortcuts in the permitting process, protection for critical wildlife habitat, the full disclosure of all drilling chemicals, and protection for taxpayers so that oil and gas companies shoulder their own risk and pay for their own cleanups.

Contact Rep. John Salazar today and urge him to support amendments to the CLEAR Act today!

Vermillion Basin - On June 29, 2010 the Bureau of Land Management's Little Snake Field Office in Craig announced that 77,000 acres of Moffat County’s Vermillion Basin should be closed to oil and gas drilling. Vermillion Basin is a spectacular wild and roadless sagebrush basin home to sensitive animal and plant species, ancient petroglyphs, and unparalleled quiet recreation opportunities. After nearly a decade of work to ensure that this amazing landscape is protected, we’ve come down to the last, most important months!

America’s Great Outdoors
Last week the America’s Great Outdoors listening sessions stopped in Grand Junction, and attendees were given the opportunity to directly comment to the BLM and the US Forest Service about conserving our treasured landscapes, protecting our wildlife habitat, and maintaining clean air and water standards. The event was attended by hundreds of folks from western Colorado and featured BLM Director Bob Abbey and Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell as hosts and speakers. Before the event, conservationists enjoyed breakfast foods in CEC’s courtesy room.
